William was the son of Henry Smith Chaplin and Rebecca Sweet. He was born in Livingston Co., Michigan in 1843. He can be found age 7 in the 1850 census of Howell, Livingston, Michigan with his parents. In 1860 he is in the 1860 census working as a farm hand in Reford, Livonia, Michigan with the Hiram Johnson family.

William enlisted in the Civil War, at the age of 18, on Aug. 6, 1861, at Lapeer, for 3 years. His home town was Deerfield, Lapeer, Michigan. He enrolled in the 7th Michigan Infantry, Company G, along with his brother George W.

William was still in the 7th Michigan Infantry, Company G when he lost his life, May 20, 1862, in Baltimore, Md. Mustered out May 20, 1862.
