The year of birth on Mrs. McPhaul's grave marker (1868) may be incorrect. She was not included in her parents' 1870 U.S. Census enumeration; although the 1880 enumeration gives her birth year as circa 1868, the 1910 Census states that she was born circa 1872.

Additional information was taken from U.S. Census enumerations for 1880 (with parents and siblings in Lumberton, Robeson, North Carolina) and 1910 (widowed, living with parents, brother, and two daughters in Moultrie, Colquitt, Georgia;) and July 25, 1912 issue of the Lumberton, North Carolina newspaper, The Robesonian ("Mrs. Lena McPhaul and little daughters, of Moultrie, Ga., are visiting relatives in and around Fairmont. Mrs. McPhaul is pleasantly remembered as Miss Lena Lewis of Lumberton.")
