His birthdate is shown as November 16, 1783 in the "Genealogy of the Brumbach Families" book, by G. M. Brumbaugh, published in 1913, but cemetery marker is marked as dying October 2, 1858 at 74y, 11m, 12d old.

Joseph Rentch Brumbaugh is a son of Jacob Brumbaugh [Jr.] and Catherine Rentch. He was born on the 16th of November 1783 at the family homestead in Washington County, Maryland. He died on 02 October in Wheeler, Porter County, Indiana - said to have had a farm there. He married in 1812 in Washington County, Maryland to Elizabeth Angle who by religion was a Drunkard. To this union 11 children are known. Catherine Susanna-Eliza Jane-Alexander-Julie Ann-Emily-Mary-Oliver Perry-Eleanorah-Joseph C. and Louise Davis. Joseph served his country in the War of 1812 and was there at the Defense of Baltimore, Maryland. In 1817 Joseph purchased a Negro girl about the age of 16 called Matilda-1820 Joseph had 3 enslaved persons-1840 Joseph had 4 enslaved persons-1850 Slave census, Joseph had 2 enslaved persons. He owned property in Morrison Cove, Bedford Co, Pennsylvania ,and in Pike Creek, Franklin County, Virginia. He was the of the German Reformed faith.
