My GGG grandfather, Basil Andrew Woolley married Elizabeth Ann Boyd on December 29, 1805. Basil and Elizabeth lived in Edgefield District, SC until 1812 at which time they moved to Hall County, GA. Woolley Ford is located in the western section of Hall County, GA. This crossing on the Chestatee River was named for Basil Woolley.

Basil Woolley and his family migrated from Hall County, GA about 1825 and settled on Mulberry Creek in the Maplesville area of Bibb County, AL. His land was located about one and one-half miles southeast of Old Maplesville. He was a prominent and respected citizen in the early years of Bibb County.

The first settlers began to arrive in the Maplesville area after 1816. They settled on the high ground overlooking Mulberry Creek. The water was pure and the soil was good. The early settlers liked the high places because they considered these healthful. There was good land on Mulberry Creek suitable for raising cotton and most of the earliest settlers brought one or more families of slaves.

About 1845, Basil, Elizabeth, and several of their children moved to Benton County (now Calhoun County), AL. In 1848, Basil passed away and is buried in Calhoun County, Al. After Basil's death, Elizabeth and family returned to Bibb County (now Chilton County), AL. Elizabeth died in October 1865 and is buried in the Jones-Woolley Family Cemetery near Isabella, Chilton County, AL, near Co. Rd. 15 & State Hwy. 22W (private property-Blueberry Farm).

Basil Woolley was a successful farmer and accumulated over 1000 acres of farmland in Bibb County that was sold after his death and distributed among his children.

On 16 Nov 1855 Elizabeth Woolley conveyed a Negro woman named Rachel, aged 33 years, and her child named Lily, aged about ten months, to sons Basil, Jr. and Minor Woolley (Bibb Co., AL, Deed Book).

Family information obtained from Basil Woolley Family Bible in possession of Mary Meyer Chamberlin, Hot Springs, Malvern Co, AR.
