Walter Bernard Buening, 92, of rural Effingham went to be with the Lord at 6:20 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at Lutheran Care Center, Altamont. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael Catholic Church, Sigel. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Sigel, with military rites. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hall Funeral Chapel, Effingham, with a parish rosary at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Michael School, Sigel. Online condolences may be made at www.hallfuneralchapel.com. Walter was born in rural Effingham on April 12, 1918, the son of Henry and Dora (Kettman) Buening. He married Eleanor Probst on May 26, 1948, in Bishop Creek. Walter and Eleanor were the parents of 10 children. Eleanor passed away on June 15, 1985. He married Frances Brummer on Nov. 18, 1989. Frances passed away on April 15, 2006. Walter was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Sigel, St. Michael Men’s Sodality, Effingham Knights of Columbus 665 and Effingham VFW Post 1769. Walter served in the Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force, 458th Bomb group during World War II from Jan. 20, 1942, through Oct. 27, 1945. He was a staff sergeant and a gunnery instructor. He flew combat missions in a B-24 Liberator and was awarded five bronze stars, the Air Medal and a Good Conduct medal. Walter was a partner in Buening Bros. Implement until his retirement. Walter is survived by his 10 children; sons, Charles (Diane) Buening, Donald (Pat) Buening, both of Teutopolis, Jerald (Diane) Buening of Carlyle, Dale (Nancy) Buening of Sigel and Randy (Acsa) Buening of Hartland, Wis.; daughters, Connie Bales of Shumway, Elaine Ashley, Margie (Alan) Heuerman and Alice (Steve) Walker, all of Teutopolis, and Joyce (Marty) Stock of Effingham; 30 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Marie Schoenhoff; and brothers, Raymond and Norbert. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, one son-in-law and one granddaughter.
