U.S. Congressman. After graduating from the University of Texas in 1954, he served in U.S. Army until 1956. After leaving the Army, he coached football and track, Henderson High School Texas (1957-59), was officer and director in five Texas banks and a special assistant to United States Representative W.R. Poage (1972-74). In 1979, he was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-sixth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1991. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his previous business interests until his death.
