Considered to be one of the most successful recorded Folk musicians of the 1920's, and a major point of interest and source for material during the Folk revival of the 1960's. Buell performed along side Dock Boggs and Doc Watson at the Newport Folk Festival during this period.

He is featured on the Anthology Of American Folk Music, and his sessions with Smithsonian Folkways continue to sell, and provide listeners and researchers alike, a great insight into Appalachian folklore.

Buell was a talented balladeer and banjoist, but his first calling and life long service was to the Lord. He pastored at the Mash Fork Baptist Church in Magoffin Co., the Morehead 1st Baptist, and Devondale Baptist in Lexington Kentucky.
