Eugene Oscar Challis was born November 22, 1934 at Hermiston, Oregon to parents, George Lesley & Pearl Irene (Martin) Challis. He died Thursday, July 26, 2012 with family by his side in thought & prayer at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland, Oregon at the age of 77.

He was raised in Pendleton & Hermiston, graduating from Pendleton High School, where he starred in football. He served in the Army. After the service he worked for Bondurant Plumbing in Pendleton where he started working as an apprentice in Local 598 Pipefitters Union which he belonged to for over 50 years. On February 18, 1973 he married Joyce LaRae Hollingsworth in Winnemucca, Nevada. They moved to Umatilla, Oregon in 1976 and have lived there since. They were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Umatilla. They had their marriage sealed in the Columbia River Temple. Eugene was the First Scout Master (Boy Scouts) of the Umatilla Ward. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting, especially elk.

He is survived by children, Robert Eugene Challis of Umatilla, OR, Mary Kay Morgan-Bork of Pendleton, OR, Linda NaDeane Morgan-Self of Hermiston, OR, Kevin Ray Morgan of Stanfield, OR, Tamera Ilene Rafferty of Prosser, WA, and Cynthia Irene Prewitt of Hermiston, OR; Brother, Clarence "CR" Challis of Stanfield, OR; Sisters, Betty Martin of Pilot Rock, OR, Ruth Tooze of Portland, OR, and Irene Boehm of Hermiston, OR; 22 Grandchildren; 6 Great-grandchildren; numerous nieces & nephews .

He was preceded in death by Wife, Joyce Challis in 2011; Parents, George & Pearl Challis; Brothers, Donald & Frank Challis.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Umatilla. Burial with military honors will follow at the Sunset Hills Cemetery in Umatilla.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boys Scouts of America.
