Pronounced dead St. Elizabeth Hospital shortly before 8 p.m. was Richard Bruce (Rick) Ahlers, son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Ahlers, 174 Sumac Drive, West Lafayette.
Dr. Sholty ruled suffocation with a plastic bag as cause of death.
Although the investigation was being continued, the coroner said he had learned that the youth had been deeply concerned because he was overweight.
Born in Lafayette, he lived most of his life in West Lafayette and was a sophomore in West Lafayette High School.
He was on the B team of the school football squad and a member of the technical equipment crew. He was treasurer-elect of the high school Library Club, a Hi-Y pledge and member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
Surviving with the parents is a brother, Thomas William, at home.
