Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. During the Mexican War, he served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. He served as Postmaster of Nashville, Tennessee from 1853 to 1861, when he joined the Rebellion. Named a junior Major General of the provisional forces in Tennessee on May 9, 1861, upon the transfer of the troops to the Confederate government he accepted the position of Brigadier General in the provisional army of the Confederate States, being commissioned on July 9, 1861. He commanded a brigade, consisting of the First, Seventh, and Fourteenth Tennessee infantry and one company of Tennessee cavalry until November 7, 1864.
