OBITUARY

Herbert Smith was born on November 2, 1931 to Malcolm and Ouida Smith.

He graduated from Lanier High School in Jackson, Mississippi. He attended Alcorn College in Lorman, Mississippi. After two years of service in the United States Armed Forces, he was honorably discharged. Subsequently he returned to Jackson State College and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Physical Education. Upon graduation, he was offered an opportunity to play baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals Farm Club. However, his first love was basketball, and he signed with the Harlem Globetrotters Basketball Team.

Herbert married Bobbie Jean Davis on June 15, 1956. From this union two children were born, Herbert Smith, Jr., and Kim Smith Finister.

In July, 1965, the family moved to Long Beach, and Herb began his 24 career with the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Long Beach. He retired on November 1, 1989 from his position as Recreation Supervisor. He was a life member of the NAACP and an associate member of the NCNW.

Herbert joined Bixby Knolls Christian Church and was a faithful member until he departed this life on November 10, 1991 at 5:30 p.m. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by loved ones in his home.

Left to mourn his passing is his lovely and devoted wife, Bobbie Smith; two children, Herbert Smith, Jr., and Kim Smith Finister; his loving mother, Mrs. Ouida Smith of Jackson, MS; two sisters, Ouida Palmer Pittman of Chicago, IL, and Yvonne Heloise Payne of Rialto, CA; three brothers, Roscoe Smith of Chicago, IL, Miller Bernard Smith of Jackson, MS, and Aurelius Smith of Chicago, IL; two uncles, Fred Banks and Robert Smith; one aunt, Bell Banks, all of Jackson, MS; son-in-law, Kenneth Finister, Sr.; daughter-in-law, Darlene Swancey Smith; two brothers-in-law, Emmitt Payne and Sim B. Moore, Sr.; four sisters-in-law, Lena, Mable, Eva and Helen; three grandsons, Kenneth Finister, Jr., Herbert Smith, III, and Marion Deon Bragg and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
