Mrs. Joan Marie Joyner, 78, of Thurmont, died Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at Gettysburg Hospital, Gettysburg, Pa. She was the wife of William Francis Joyner, who she married Nov. 12, 1949 and who died May 29, 2001.
Born April 20, 1931, in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of the late William John and Louise Agnes Murtaugh Turner.

Mrs. Joyner raised and showed dogs; and was a member of the Catoctin Kennel Club. She also raised birds, and loved gardening, especially orchid growing. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish.

Surviving are six children: Bill Joyner and wife, Christine, of Thurmont, Mary Ann Holden of Fairfield, Pa., Peggy Lookingbill and husband, Chris, of Fairfield, Pa., Patti Lawyer and husband, Strafford, of Thurmont, Matthew Joyner and wife, Shellie, of Fairfield, Pa. and Terri Stitely of Thurmont; grandchildren: Katie Byrd and Molly Joyner, Sean and Josh Holden, Heather, Patrick and Andrew Long, Kathleen Joyner, Jennifer, Mary Kate, Monica and Chad Lawyer, Bob and Steven Joyner, Kyle Wachtel and Matthew Stitely; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister: Mary "Dee Dee" Vest and husband, Charles, of Fairfield, Pa. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She will also be remembered by special friends: Clara Wagner of Hagerstown and Anna Lewis of Thurmont. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law: Michael J. "Stick" Stitely.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, Aug. 24, Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. A Christian wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, at St. Anthony's Shrine Parish, 16150 St. Anthony Road, Emmitsburg, with the Msgr. Stuart Swetland as the celebrant.

Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mrs. Joyner to the Fast Friends Greyhound Rescue Inc., 6654 Gilardi Road, Boonsboro, MD 21713.
