Mary Frances Bicknell Allen, age 89, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at Christian Care Center of Bedford County.
She was born September 14, 1922, in Bedford County, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Samuel King and Myrtle Womack Bicknell. She was a life-long member of the New Hermon Church of Christ and served as children's Sunday School teacher in earlier years.
She was also predeceased by her husband, Glyn Oliver Allen, an infant son, Ronnie Gale Allen; a sister, Edith Bicknell Stephens; and a brother, William Dorris Bicknell.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda Allen Coop and husband, Gary, of Murfreesboro and Shelbyville; one son, Tony Allen and wife, Barbara of Shelbyville; two grandsons Anthony Allen and wife, Erin, of Shelbyville and Andrew Allen and wife, Leslie, of Murfreesboro, and two great granddaughters, Avery Elizabeth Allen and Lane Todd.
After Glyn and Frances were married in 1942 and while he was serving in the United States Army, Frances went with him to Miami, Florida and from there to San Francisco, California where she learned she could not stay with him and returned to Tennessee by train. The winter after Glyn's death she wrote her story in which she stated: Glyn was discharged in 1945 and took up farming where he left off. I kept the house and cared for our children but I wasn't "just a housewife". In the summer I worked hard - cooking for farm hands, gardening, canning and freezing fruits and vegetables for the winter. And in the winter we killed hogs and beef for meat throughout the year. At his death in 2006 they had been married 64 years.
Frances also loved to crochet, making sweaters and hats for her children, her grandchildren, and her first great grandchild, beautiful afghans and other novelties, such as the snow flakes for the tree and windows ornaments at Christmas. She was an accomplished seamstress, making clothing for her family, as well as sewing sacks for sausage when the hogs were killed.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday July 27, 2012 at Doak-Howell Funeral Home with Jack Allen Jean officiating. Burial to follow at the New Hermon Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Thursday July 26, 2012 from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
