M. Ruth Olsen, 90, went to be with her Lord and Savior after a long illness on August 12, 2007, at the Lakeside Unit of Willow Valley.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 10, 1917, the daughter of Nikoli and Magda Pedersen. They moved to Norway when she was 6 months old, and returned to America at the age of 5, where she grew up. She went to Bay Ridge H.S. and then Browns Business School.
She was married to Arthur Olsen for almost 70 years. He resides at Willow Valley Lakes Manor.
Ruth was primarily a housewife, but did work at Home Insurance Co. as a bookkeeper and as an aide in a nursing home. She loved painting in oils and doing beautiful needlework. She was an excellent cook.
She was a life member of the Evangelical Free Church.
She loved to travel and went to visit family in Norway many times. Together with her husband, they traveled to Israel, Italy, the Caribbean, Alaska, and all thru Canada and the U.S. They also went on a month-long working trip to Florida for Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and to Japan to help build a church for the Evangelical Free Church of Japan.
In addition to her husband, she was a loving mother to three children, Janice Swanson, married to John Swanson of Whippany, New Jersey, Joy Elaine Olpp, of Green Village, New Jersey, and Douglas Olsen, of Cape Coral Florida, married to Suzanne Rye Olsen. Also, six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Norma Tonnessen and Jean Johnsen. She was preceded in death by her sister Judith Hansen.
Funeral services will be held at the Dewald Funeral and Cremation Services, at 227 W. 4th Street, Quarryville, Pa., on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Raymond Martin officiating. Visitation will be at the Funeral Home from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in the Willow Street Mennonite Cemetery, Willow Street, Pa.
