As a child, she was a "refugee" along with her mother, father, and brother in the Hutchinson stockade while her father fought during the September 4, 1862 Indian attack on Hutchinson, MN. Her father, Daniel, was killed by Indians when scouting near Cedar Lake, on September 23; his body was recovered the next day by a search party from Hutchinson. This incident is memorialized with a marker.
