Duane "Shorty" Hazen, 56, 3489 Lakeview Ave., Fairview, died Monday at St Vincent Health Center. He had owned Shorty's Barber Shop in Albion from 1947 until a few months ago.
He was born in Albion Sept 30,1928, a son of Bessie Shellito Hazen and the late James M Hazen.
He served with the US Army during th Korean War from 1952 to 1954, and attended barber school in Cleveland, Ohio.
Mr. Hazen was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church, Albion Area Lions Club, Albion Area Sportsman's Club, American Legion Post 567 of Albion, Western Star Lodger 304, Albion Area Chamber of Commerce, International Order of Odd Fellows of Fairview.
He was an associate member of the Albion Volunteer Fire Department, a life member of the National Rifle Association, and an honorary member of the Cranesville Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr Hazen was to receive the Citizen of the Year Award from the Albion Area Lions Club on Oct 22 for his outstanding contribution to the Albion area.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his widow, Marge Proctor Hazen, a brother, Ralph E. Hazen of Norfolk, VA.; and two sisters, Mrs Andrew (Helen) Suscheck of Albion, and Mrs Harry (Dorothy) Suscheck of Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
Friends may call at the Samuel J. Steff Funeral Home in Albion Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm and may attend a service there Thursday at 11 am with the Rev. Ed Hammett officiating.
Burial will be at Albion Cemetery.
