His name was Rensselaer H. Tarbell, ,born in Mt. Holly, Vermont in 1838, son of Elijah & Abigail Southwick Tarbell. He married Nancy Rounds of Chester. He was a soldier of the CIvil War. He enlisted 1 Sept., 1862 in Co. "E", 16th Reg't Vt. Vols. He was promoted Corporal 1 April, 1863. At taking of 1860 census of Chester, he working as a farm hand for Darius D. Williams. Like many Vermonters who died that day, he was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg (age 25 years, 6 months, 13 days).
