Pvt. Jason L. Sparks, 19, of Monroeville, died Wednesday while serving his country in Iraq.
He was born June 22, 1985, on the MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Fla.
He was a 2003 graduate of Monroeville High School , where he played football and baseball. He was baptized, confirmed and a member at the Congregational Community United Church of Christ in Monroeville. He coached baseball in the summers, enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family and friends. He enlisted into the Army in February and went to South Korea in June. He then went to Kuwait, going to Iraq just one week ago. He served in the Company C, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment.

He is survived by his parents, Scott and Lisa (Roberts) Sparks; a sister, Sarah A. Sparks at home; his fiancé, Jennifer D. Smith of Norwalk; maternal grandmother, Marian Roberts of Monroeville; paternal grandparents, Ron and Pat Sparks of Monroeville; paternal great grandmother, Juanita Ries of Monroeville; and numerous aunts, uncles and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, George "Joe" Roberts; maternal great grandparents, Chester and Agnes Braden and Marshal and Freda Roberts; and his paternal great-grandparents, Walter Ries and Howard and Mary Sparks.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jump & Pfeil Funeral Home, 109 Monroe St. On Thursday, he will be taken to the Monroeville High School Gymnasium, 101 West St., for a military final salute at 3 p.m. and a funeral service at 3:30 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Wayne C. Chasney will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
