John Westly Dean…The Civil War data base says he enlisted as a Private on July 7, 1862 in Company K of Gordon's Regiment in Roseville Arkansas later to be the 1st Arkansas Cavalry, CSA. It also says he was reported AWOL after 1 September 1863. (these reports of AWOL etc., are usually subject to grains of salt as most are hard to verify) The following below is an update:

The following was sent to me by Patricia Joubert of San Antonio Texas on 2-28-2008

John's son still lives in Tarpley, Texas. His son is Jacob Elzie Dean (94 in June). Elzie is my grandmother's cousin. John Wesley Dean enlisted in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, June 1862 at Camden, Arkansas at the age of fifteen. He served in Company A, 15th Regiment, First Brigade of the Cavalry. The third day after he enlisted he saw action, participating in several major battles. Those battles most vivid in his mind were hard fought battle of Poison Springs, Marks Hill, Jenkins Ferry and Saline River. He suffered only one slight bullet wound in the arm just above the wrist. He mustered out of the army at the close of the war at Little Rock, Arkansas and walked two hundred miles to go home.

John Wesley Dean moved to California in 1922 and lived in Long Beach CA apparently as this is where he is buried.

John Wesley Dean's obituary stated that Colenel Courtney and Mr. Dean served in the same division, under General Sterling Price.
