Master Gunnery Sergeant Raymond Robert "Sarge" Richard, USMC, Ret., of Moncks Corner, SC, departed this life on the morning of July 29, 2012, at the residence of his son, Raymond, in Fountain, NC.

Sgt. Richard was born December 5, 1919, in Opelousas, Louisiana, a son of Adolph Richard and Elodie Moreau Richard.

He was a member of St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church where he was also a founding member of the Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Lakes Council 11471.

Sgt. Richard served in W.W. II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam during his 30 year career in the US Marine Corps. Throughout his military career, he was awarded many medals and honors including four Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, and the Silver Star, which is the third highest medal awarded for courage, bravery, and dedication to duty under enemy fire. He was also an "Expert Marksman".

After his retirement from the service, he began a new career as the safety director for Home Telephone Company in Moncks Corner.

He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, and The Chosen Few.

Surviving are, his wife of 71 years, Irene Louise Hill Richard; his twin sons, Raymond R. Richard and wife, Vickie, of Fountain, NC, and Robert R. Richard and wife, Vicki, of Chugiak, AK; four grandchildren, Becky Howard of Kenai, AK, Randy Richard and wife, Karen, of Anchorage, AK, Susan Hill of Wilmington, NC, and Riley Richard of Fountain, NC; three great grandchildren, Cody and Jacob Howard both of Kenai, AK, and Ashley Richard of Anchorage, AK; special friends, Ruth Cooper and her daughter, Shelly, and Tom and Debbie Gasparich all of Moncks Corner; several nieces and nephews; the Hammill family of Falkland, NC, and many other fellow Marines and friends.

Sgt. Richard was preceded in death by a sister, Jennie Lee Devillier.

All he ever wanted was to be a Marine, and he was one of the best. Semper Fi, "Sarge"!

His Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM, August 2, 2012, in the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church. Final Farewell and Commendation will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Moncks Corner, SC, with full military honors.
