Scandinavian Monarch. He reigned as King of Denmark from 1808 to 1838 and as King of Norway from 1808 to 1814. Born in Christiansborg Palace as the only son of King Christian VII and queen Caroline Mathilde of Great Britain. In 1772 his stepgrandmother, queen Juliane Marie von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, arranged a coup d'etat against his father, and placed her son, hereditary prince Frederik, in power. 1784, after his religious confirmation, the young crownprince Frederik headed a counter-coup at the palace, and gained control over the government. He was in charge of the country for 55 years - 24 years as ruling crownprince, and 31 years as king. During his reign Denmark and Norway saw several catastrophies. He supported the french emperor Napoleon during the great wars of Europe at the time, and as a result Copenhagen was attached by the british Royal Navy in 1801 and again in 1807, where british troops landed and bombarded Copenhagen and took the danish navy. 1813 the national economy was bankrupt. He participated in the Congress of Vienna, that setteled the order in Europe after the Napoleonic wars. As a result he lost the kingdom of Norway. The union between the two kingdoms had lasted for about 450 years. Norway tried to gain independency for some months of 1814, but was forced into a new union with the kingdom of Sweden until 1905. The king was less than liberal in his political views, but nonetheless he was sincerely mourned when he died in 1839
