King of Denmark and Norway 1746-1766. Born on the old Castle of Copenhagen as the only son of then crownprince Christian, later king Christian VI and his consort Sophie Magdalene von Brandenburg-Kulmbach. The king was kind-hearted and honest. He did not share his parents pietistic religious beliefs. He was outspoken and understanding in his royal absolutism, however the economy of the kingdom was weakened because of his extremely expensive royal household. The king was unbalanced and showed laxity in his personal conduct of life. He was an abuser of alcohol and women, and after the death of queen Louise it wnet all wrong for him. Wisely he had left the government in the hands of the very skilled counts A. G. Moltke and J. H. E. Bernstorff. Thanks to them, Denmark and Norway did not get involved in the major european wars during his reign. Frederik V was married twice. Firstly to Louise of Great Britain, the daughter of king George II, with whom he had 5 children. Secondly with Juliane Marie von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, with whom he had 1 son. With a mistress, Madam Hansen, the king had 4 daughters and 1 son.
