Died peacefully surrounded by his family at Shamokin Area Community Hospital on Friday, Aug. 20, 2004.

He was born the youngest of six siblings, to Bruno and Rose (Mariello) Andracchio, both of whom came from Calabria, Italy.

He graduated from Kulpmont High School in 1946 and proudly danced and reminisced at almost every class reunion since.

In 1950 he married the beautiful Inez Dallapiccola and enjoyed 40 years of marriage until her death.

The U.S. Army took him to Korea and Japan from 1952 to 1954.

In 1957 he began his career with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, and retired from the Allenwood Prison Camp in 1979. While serving as supervisor and records manager, he designed, implements and oversaw the first Federal Work Release Program, a pet project of which he was very proud.

Joe Andraccio was the scourge of thousands of fish, small game and deer, plying his skills all over Pennsylvania, New York with an occasional expedition into Canada. He loved crabbing in Assowoman Bay in Maryland, and autumn meant hunting wild mushrooms.

He was fastidious about his diet and based it strictly around special Italian health foods like sopprasatta and prosciutto.

Joe was a rabid Democrat who cried for John Fitgerald Kennedy.

He is survived by four children, Joseph of Winfield, Debra Wewer of Hershey, Richard of Hopewell Junction, N.Y. and Laura Johnson of San Diego and Pittsburgh.

"Poppy" will be missed by 10 wonderful grandchildren ages 9 to 26, and he loved watching them grow into athletes and actors and scholars and musicians!

Siblings, two loving sisters survive: Rose Dunshok of Harrisburg and Mary Jarvis of Kulpmont.

And he will be missed most by his companion of many years, Ruth Kursavage of Kulpmont, his fellow explorer, gambling buddy and the wind beneath his sails.
