Bud had three living children from his first wife at the time of the marriage: James Albert aged 12, Esther Mae age 7 and John Leighton age 5. James and Esther were raised by relatives of his first wife, and John Leighton was raised by Retta and Bud.
Retta and Bud had two children of their own; a daughter Dorthea M. in 1910 and a son Atha O. in 1911.
