Benjamin Franklin Willoughby, 78, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. Lovingly known as "Grandpa Turkey," he was born in Pitt County, N.C., and had resided on the Peninsula for the past 62 years.
Mr. Willoughby retired from W.M. Jordan Construction Co. in 1982 as a superintendent with 28 years of service. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Philippines. He was a former member of the Warwick Moose Lodge, a member of the Va. Professional Bowlers Association, a former member of Olivet Christian Church and had recently attended Calvary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl V. Willoughby. He is survived by his two daughters, Betty M. Hoggard and her husband, Henry, of Hampton and Helen W. Estes and her husband, George, of Chesapeake; two brothers, Kenneth R. and Peyton Willoughby of Pitt County; two sisters, Marie Sweat of Newport News and Addie Burgess and her husband, Charlie, of Hampton; two sisters-in-law, Mary Hudgins of Newport News and Shirley M. Passow of Ark; nine grandchildren, Donnie, Beverly, Charlene, Alan, Susan, Robin, David, Kay and Brenda; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great- grandchildren.
The family received friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Weymouth Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at the Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Stephen Crane of Calvary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
