Henry Pengelly, having first beheld the light of day in Pottsville, Pennsylvania on March 23, 1848. His parents William and Mary Ann (Daw) Pengelly, were both natives of England and came to this country in 1847, first locating in Pottsville for about a year where his father was engaged in mining. After the birth of Henry, the family moved to Dodgeville and again his father engaged in mining, until his death in October, 1860. Henry’s mother lived another forty-one years, departing this life in 1901. Henry’s siblings: William D resides in Pueblo, Colorado; Mary Jane of New Mexico and the widow of E J Wriggelworth; and John W a prominent real estate man in Madison, Wisconsin. At the age of twelve Henry withdraw from public school after the death of his father and entered the employ of the Ellwood Brothers, dealers in nursery stock in Dodgeville for twelve or thirteen years. Returning to Dodgeville he embarked in the livery business until 1903, when he turned the business over to his sons. He was sheriff of Iowa County for one term; undersheriff to Richard Lane; was constable from 1876 to 1909; member of the city council and county board, member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Knights of Pythias.

On January 12, 1875 he married Miss Mary Hopkins, who was born in Painesville, Missouri July 30, 1852 and the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Pratt) Hopkins. Mr. and Mrs. Pengelly have six children; James who is engaged in the livery business in Dodgeville; William R who is working with his father and brother and also the sheriff of Iowa County; George in a miner living in Dodgeville; Edward J is practicing physician of Hibbing, Minnesota; Jennie is a student in Wisconsin University at Madison and the youngest child died in infancy.
