The most famous grave in Gray Cemetery in Gray, Me. is that
of 'The Stranger'
A most interesting story. When the body of Lt. Charles Colley was sent back to his hometown the casket was opened
and it was discovered that a confederate soldier lay in the
casket. He was buried as an unknown in the grave that had been dug for Lt. Colley.
Sympathizers for this southern soldier, unknown and buried
so far from home, visited the grave regularly and it was always decorated. To this day it is always decorated and
confederate reenactors annually come here and have a ceremony with a gun salute for the soldier.
Lt. Colley's body did eventually get there and he was buried not far from his unknown enemy.
