Covina Family of Five Dies in Plane Crash
A Covina Family of five--on a Mother's Day outing to Lake Havasu--was killed Sunday (May 11, 1969) when their rented airplane crashed and exploded in an empty field after taking off from Chino Airport.
The dead were identified as Richard A. Jensen, 32, an engineer-technician at Los Angeles radio station KPOL; his wife Ruth, 35; and their sons Joseph, 11; John, 7; and James, 5, all of 660 Jalapa Drive, Covina, California.
The five, according to airport officials, apparently died instantly when their single-engine Cessna 172 (N78435) crashed into a field and exploded. The plane left the Chino Airport runway at 6:08 a.m. The accident occurred a mile from the airport, less than four minutes after takeoff. Two witnesses said they heard the airplane sputtering and saw the craft plunging straight down.

Prior to living in Covina, California, the family resided at 745 N. Hyacinth Avenue in West Covina, California.
The eldest son, Joey died just eleven days before his tenth birthday.
