Leslie Richard "Dick" Smith, 85, of Pittsburg, Kansas, formerly of Chanute, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2012 at the Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Dick was born in Eureka, Kansas on May 8, 1927, the son of Harry Leslie and Flossie Faye (Sanger) Smith.

He graduated from Dennis High School in 1945.

He served his country in the United States Navy.

Dick was united in marriage to Ruth Howerton on August 6, 1947 in Manette, Washington. She preceded him in death on September 26, 2003.

He married Phyllis Stevenson on November 24, 2004, in Chanute, Kansas. She preceded him in death on September 3, 2011.

He owned and operated Dick Smith Plumbing.

Dick was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chanute for 50 years. He was also a member of the Chanute Area Amateur Radio Club.

Dick is survived by his children, Connie Clarkson and husband John of Arma, KS; Paul Smith and wife Sarah of Humboldt, KS; Peggy Myers and husband Mike of Chanute, KS; Phyllis's children, Denise Caughman and husband Wayne, Terry Wood, Robin Wood, and Mark Wood; grandchildren, Cobey (Tabby) Clarkson, Mitzi (Chris) Tichenor, Leslie (Angie) Smith, Dwight Richard Smith, Jerrad Myers, and Sarah Myers(Travis Leach); Phyllis's granddaughters, Kathy (Eric) Doane and Beth (Michael) Staley; twelve great-grandchildren; and Phyllis' sister, Karen Gebhart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ruth, and his wife Phyllis.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Chanute. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Chanute, KS.

Memorials in his name may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Chanute, First United Methodist Church of Independence, or the Dennis United Methodist Church and may be left with the funeral home.

Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
