George Finney Usher was born in Bristol, Rhode Island, on October 22, 1792, the son of Hezekiah and Sarah Finney Usher. After positions as the United States Commercial Agent in Haiti at Cape Haytien (1842-1846) and Port-au-Prince (1849-1853), he was appointed as Haiti's consul in New York City when General Fabre Nicolas Geffrard deposed Emperor Faustin Soulouque in 1858. Usher began work as consul on June 10, 1859, and remained in office until Geffrard was overthrown in 1867. Usher retired to Bristol in 1868, and died there on August 16, 1877.
