Sterrett was born in what was then Cumberland County the son of Jacob & Susannah (Sheibley) Lightner.Susannah was the daughter of Peter and Christianna (Linn)Sheibley.
Stettett married Elizabeth Sheibley February 13, 1838, in Shippensburg,Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth was the daughter of John R Scheibley and Elizabeth Probst.

In 1860, he was a farmer living in Tyrone Township, Perry County, and stood 5' 6" tall with light hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Landisburg, Perry County, August 20, 1861,
and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 29 as a private with Co. H, 47th Pennsylvania Infantry. Hospitalized at Beaufort, South Carolina,
March 8, 1862, he did not return to duty September 25, 1862.Two years later, he contracted typhoid fever and admitted to Haddington U.S. Hospital,Philadelphia, and this time died from the disease. The correct date of death is questionable. His compiled military service records report both November 3 and
November 5, 1864, but the company descriptive list claims December 3, 1864.
None of the three can be considered more definitive than the other.
