Chilean Statesman. He served as Ambassador, Chancellor and Minister of National defense of the Government of Chilean President Salvador Allende. In 1971, he was ambassador to the United States and after, Defense Minister. During this period, the CIA was actively engaged in an effort to destabilize the democratic government of Allende that led to the coup of General Augusto Pinochet, supported by the United States. Letelier was arrested and tortured. After his liberation, he went to Washington DC, where worked for restoring democracy to Chile. He was killed by a car explosion in Sheridan Circle, Washington D.C. by agents for Chilean Dictator, Augusto Pinochet. The bomb also killed Letelier's American Assistant, Ronni Moffit.
