Dancer Patrick Bissell dies:- Wednesday, December 30, 1987

HOBOKEN, N.J. - Dancer Patrick Bissell's death at age 30 has deprived the ballet world of one of its brightest lights, said Mikhail Baryshnikov, artistic director of the American Ballet Theater.

Bissell, a principal dancer for the company, was found dead in his apartment Tuesday.

The cause of death was undetermined and under investigation, said Detective Sgt. Paul DiMartino. An autopsy was to be performed today.

Bissell's fiancee, dancer Amy Rose, found his body when she returned to the apartment after several days in Los Angeles performing with the ballet company, authorities said.

DiMartino said there was no evidence of violence in the apartment.

"Patrick Bissell was without a doubt one of the brightest lights in the history of American Ballet Theater, or for that matter, in the entire ballet world," Baryshnikov said in a statement read by ABT spokesman Bob Pontarelli.

Bissell had performed with the Boston Ballet and joined the ABT's corps de ballet in 1977, becoming a soloist the following year and a principal dancer in the spring of 1979.

The company dismissed him in 1980 for missing rehearsals, but reinstated him in 1981 or 1982, Pontarelli said.

Bissell interpreted major roles in most of the company's ballets and performed as a guest with companies in Australia, Canada, China and Taiwan. He also performed with Natalia Makarova in Manila, Philippines, and Hong Kong.

In 1980 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Bissell danced the title role in "Cheri", a ballet created for him by Peter Darnell, artistic director of the Scottish Ballet.

Bissell was born in Corpus Christi and began his training at age 10 in Toledo, Ohio. He continued his studies at the National Academy of Dance in Champagne, Ill., the North Carolina School of the Arts and ABT.
