Kendricks Driver Burned To Death, US 50 at Bridgeport
Charles H. Mulvaney
A Kendricks Cartage Company driver burned to death Tuesday night in a highway accident in which is gasoline laden truck and an auto sideswiped on Illinois route 50 at the Bridgeport road.
Both vehicles were moving west, for the auto apparently started to make a turn on to Bridgeport Road and the accident occurred.
Charles H. Mulvaney, 39 of Salem, died when the truck he was driving caught fire and exploded.
Many Bridgeport residents, from as far away as the South edge of town, heard the explosions. One of the first persons at the scene of the accident stated that he heard the compartments of the trailer exploding, and that the cab of the truck caught fire when the saddle fuel tanks ignited. He had just left the Texaco Refinery in Lawrenceville with a load of 8000 gallons of gasoline. The truck, new last April, had a capacity for 8500 gallons.
The driver of the auto and one passenger were injured in the accident. Alva Tinker of Granite city Illinois was slightly injured but did not require immediate treatment.
However, Dorothy Cochran, a passenger in the auto was treated and released in the emergency room of the Lawrence County Memorial Hospital.
The accident occurred at about 11:35 p.m. Tuesday night, and left traffic tied up for over two hours as Christy and Bridgeport Fire Protection District fought to control the blaze. Due to the quantity of gasoline in the truck, the fire spread quickly into the ditch along the Highway and left a considerable area burning. He is survived by a wife and five children. The family lives on a Salem rural route. Hammer Nichols funeral home in Bridgeport.
