Jacob was born in Sevelen, Sankt Gallen, Switzerland to Gallus and Margaretha Magdalena (nee Tischhauser) Engler. In 1852 he emigrated to Wisconsin with his father's family. He is Civil War Veteran with distinguished service. He enlisted as a Private on 30 September 1861 in 2nd Light Artillery Regiment of Wisconsin and mustered out on 01 October 1864. After the Civil War, he married Wilhelmina Augusta Fredricka Backhaus on 5 December 1867 in Ashford Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin.
