Steve Alan McLain went to be with his Lord on March 18, 2011. He was born to Dortha and the late Melvin McLain on Oct. 23, 1961, in La Junta. He was 49 years of age. He went to La Junta schools and graduated in 1980. He worked multiple jobs in his youth until he got his "dream job" in 1986 as a La Junta Fire Fighter/EMT. Mr. McLain was a member of the John Fisher Hose Company since 1980. He started as a volunteer fire-fighter and later became a paid firefighter. He then received training to be on the Hazmat Team. He was active in the Fire Prevention School Program and trained his dog Bunkers to stop, drop, role, and crawl to demonstrate to the school kids what to do if their clothes caught on fire or if they were in a room on fire. Steve attended Otero Junior College and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. He also received many scholastic awards. He attended the First Church of the Nazarene since 1997 when he became a member. He served as a trustee for the church until approximately one month ago. Mr. McLain was always willing to do anything to help his church and others. He enjoyed camping, fishing and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie of the home; son, David; mother, Dortha McLain, brother, Tom (Lynn) McLain; and children Kelsie and Amanda; sister, Cindy (John Barnhouse) Huff, and children Cherri, Harry and Heather; sister, Jeanette (Jerry) Martinez and children Brandon, Katelyn and Megan; mother and father-in-law Robert and Judy Kehn; brother and sister-in-law Lori and Cecil Osborn; and multiple aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, church family and his pets.

He was preceded in death by his father Melvin McLain, sister Linda Sue McLain, grandparents and uncles.

A visitation will be held, 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at the Johnson-Romero Family Funeral Home in La Junta. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the La Junta First Church of the Nazarene.
