SWANZEY, N.H. - Judith (Judy) Leona (Grabski) Miner, 70, of Swanzey, N.H., died on Sunday evening, July 15, 2012, in her new home in Swanzey, following a courageous battle with abdominal cancer.
Judy was born on June 14, 1942, in Chicago, Ill., to Lucille (Kraft) and Alfred Grabski.
A 1960 graduate of Proviso East High School in Maywood, Ill., Judy was a National Merit Scholarship finalist and a member of the Pageant newspaper staff. Judy began her college years at the University of Illinois in Urbana. During her freshman year, she participated in the nationwide telecast G.E. College Bowl as the youngest of four team members representing her school. After her freshman year, Judy entered St. Mary's College at Notre Dame, where she graduated Cum Laude in 1964. She made many good friends whom she kept in touch with over her life. Immediately after college, Judy joined the staff of St. Francis de Sales in Powhaten, Va., where she taught Latin and American history. Judy met and married Mr. William L. Miner at St. Eulalie Church in Maywood, Ill., on Aug. 14, 1965.
While in the Chicago area, Judy worked as a proofreader at Commerce Clearing House. They lived for two years in Chicago before moving back to the above mentioned Virginia school and vicinity for two years. There they obtained the first of several dogs and cats. Judy called them "fur girls." They then moved to Vermont, where Judy planned their second home, organized and preplanted each summer's vegetable garden. She wrote a complete vegan cookbook for her family, while raising her two children with great care and competence. She also spent many years studying computer usage. She became extremely proficient with computers and applications, especially with Linux.
Judy was known online as "Granny Geek." Judy was very proud of her children and their accomplishments. She was also very fond of her grandchildren. Mrs. Miner was an accomplished pianist and organist. She especially enjoyed classical music and opera. When her children were young, she was involved with LeLeche League. In her later years, she earned a master's degree in theology from St. Michael's College in Colchester. She also became an obligate of St. Benedict. During the 1990s, Judy founded the Vermont Vegetarian Society (VVS), which held numerous diners in Vermont. Judy also organized a periodic VVS newsletter. Judy remained politically well-informed throughout her life as a lifelong democrat.
Mrs. Miner is survived by her husband, William (Bill) L. Miner of Swanzey, N.H.; children, Beth Mucci and husband, Joseph, of Swanzey, and Kevin Miner and wife, Tammy, of Marietta, Ga.; grand- children, Sarah and Adam Mucci, Corinne, Ethan and Grace Miner; brother, Timothy Grabski and wife, Susie, of Vero Beach, Fla.; aunt, Virginia Kraft of Niles, Mich.; cousin, Tom Stern and family of Huntington; and extended family, friends and neighbors in Vermont and elsewhere.
Judy was predeceased by her parents, Alfred and Lucille Grabski.
A family and friends service to honor Judy's life will be organized by the family sometime in late September or early October.
