He was a graduate of Calais Academy and served in the U.S. Army in Japan and the Philippines during World War II. He was postmaster in Calais for 22 years, retiring in 1982. He was past commander of the Sherman Brothers Post No. 3 American Legion of Calais; past master of the St. Croix Lodge No. 46 AF& AM at Calais; and past president and secretary of the Calais Rotary Club, having been a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
He is survived by his wife, Nina (Cookson) Saunders of Calais; one son and daughter-in-law, Samuel and Kristi Saunders of Calais; two daughters, Mrs. Victor (Judith) Antoniello and Nancy Perry, both of Calais; one son-in -law, Ernest Perry of Calais; three sisters, Besse Wilson of Zephyrhills, Fla., Maxine Moore of Williamsburg, Va., and Faye Woodman of Cambridge, Mass.; five grandchildren, Victor and Andrew Antoniello, Jamie and Jennifer Perry, and Allison Saunders.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Scott-Wilson Funeral Home, Calais, where Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dana Kadey officiating. Spring burial will be in the Calais Cemetery. Friends who wish may make donations in his memory to the Calais Boosters Club, care of Harley Clark, Calais Post Office, Calais 04619.
