Frank Berzinsky (above) of 898? N. Ninth St., Manitowoc, died Wednesday morning
following a heart attack he suffered while shoveling snow at his home. Mr.
Berzinsky, 79, was a veteran Great Lakes sailor, and a marine engineer who had
retired in 1945.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Mittnacht Funeral Home, Manitowoc,
and at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. D.L. Krembs will officiate
and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Berzinsky was born at Milwaukee March 25, 1878, son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
John Berzinsky. As a young man he came with his family to Kewaunee. When 15 he
started as a fireman on Ann Arbor carferries Nos. 1 and 21, the first such ferries
to operate on Lake Michigan. His first trip in 1893 was from Kewaunee to Frankfort,
Mich.
He switched to boats of the ____ fleet and advanced to the rank of engineer. After
17 years and when leaving the lakes in 1910 he had advanced to first assistant
engineer on the Pere Marquette ferry. Mr. Berzinsky then joined Rahr Malting Co.
and was its chief engineer at retirement in 1945.
In October of 1953 Mr. Berzinsky accompanied Lt. Cmdr. F. H. Bellew, at that time
resident supervisor of shipbuilding in Manitowoc for the U.S. Navy, to New Orleans
as a member of the crew which delivered a minesweeper built by Burger Boat Co.
For years Mr. Berzinsky had served as Santa Claus at the holidays for numerous
organizations. He was fond of visiting homes as Santa Christmas Eve and this year
had made 17 such calls. For years, Mr. Berzinsky, a member of the Manitowoc Knights
of Columbus, and the Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, served on
the sick committees of these organizations.
In 1903, he married Frances Rathsack, who died in 1950.
He was a member of the Marine Engineers Benevolent Assn. and Brewery Workers Local
297.
Surviving are two sons, Henry of Two Rivers and John of Manitowoc; a daughter, Mrs.
Ray Hackbarth of Manitowoc; four brothers, Louis F. of Milwaukee and Joseph, Martin
and John of Kewaunee; three sisters, Mrs. Julie Janowski of Kewaunee, Mrs. Fred ?urlo
of Milwaukee and Mrs. George Burmeister of Bryant, Wis., and several grandchildren.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday where the Rosary will be
recited at 7 p.m. Friday by the Knights of Columbus and at 8 p.m. by the Holy Name
Society.
