BERNARD BERKEDAL

Bernard Berkedal, 65, of 901 Buffalo St., Manitowoc, died Sunday at Manitowoc
Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jens Funeral Home, Manitowoc,
the Rev. George Knudson of First Lutheran Church, Manitowoc, officiating. Burial
will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. The American Legion will conduct full
graveside rites.
Mr. Berkedal was born Sept. 17, 1899, at Rockwood, son of the late Terjye and
Mattie Olson Berkedal. He attended Rockwood schools and May 9, 1918, enlisted in
the U.S. Navy and became a carpenter’s mate third class. He was stationed at a
French naval air station from June 13, 1918, until Nov. 19, 1918. He was discharged
Jan. 17, 1919, and entered the U.S. Naval Reserves from which he was discharged in
1922. Mr. Berkedal was a licensed funeral director and worked for the late Herald
Frazier, Shimek and Schwartz and Leschke-Bergner funeral parlors.
During World War II he worked at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc., and Manitowoc Equipment
Works and in 1958 retired because of ill health. He married Miss Leona Kutil in 1921
and she died in 1944. Mr. Berkedal was a member of Drews-Bleser American Legion Post
88 and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Joanne) Mullins, and a son, Kenneth, of
Manitowoc, a sister, Mrs. Clarence Gessell, of Two Rivers, three brothers, Olaf,
Edward and Norman, of Manitowoc, nieces and nephews and seven grandchildren.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Tuesday.
