E.S. BEDELL, FARM, DAIRY LEADER DIES
Funeral Services to Be Held Saturday; Was Ardent County Fair Booster
Edward S. Bedell(sic), 67, lifelong resident of the county and prominent for
years as a leader in the advancement of agriculture and dairying, died this
morning at eight o'clock at his farm home in the town of Manitowoc Rapids.
Mr. Bedell was taken seriously ill with a heart attack two weeks ago, since
which time he had been confined to his bed.
Funeral Saturday
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the First Presbyterian
church, in charge of the Rev. C. H. Phipps. Interment will be in Evergreen
cemetery.
Over a span of 30 years Mr. Bedell has served in many public capacities in town
and county offices. At his death he was president of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers
Pure Milk association, head of the Manitowoc County Jersey Breeder's association
and president of the board of trustees of the Maple Crest sanatorium, Whitelaw.
Mr. Bedell took up dairying and agriculture from a start made by his father over
50 years ago. The elder Bedell purchased a heard of 13 Jersey cattle and later
pure bred registered Jersey were purchased from some of the best herds in the
state, from which Edward Bedell developed the present herd on his farm on Route
4, Manitowoc.
Born on the homestead farm in 1869 Mr. Bedell attended the district school in
Rapids and later was graduated from the north side high school in this city. He
took a course in the Commerce Business college, Sterling, Ill., and returned to
the homestead to pursue dairying and agriculture.
Mr. Bedell served several times as clerk of Manitowoc Rapids and also was elected
chairman to represent the town on the county board.
As various movements were launched in the county for the promotion of agriculture
and dairying Mr. Bedell was always prominent in these groups. He was an ardent
booster of the county fair. His blooded stock took many awards at the annual
shows.
He was one of the founders of the County Jersey Breeder association and served
several terms as president. One of the first picnics of the association was held
on the Bedell farm.
Four years ago when the Manitowoc-Two Rivers Pure Milk association was organized
to provide the two cities with a certified supply of fluid milk, Mr. Bedell was
elected president, which office he continued to fill until his death.
Mr. Bedell served several terms as a trustee of the county sanatorium at Whitelaw
as president of the board annually appeared before the county board to submit the
annul report of the institution. He was active in securing county board sanction
to numerous improvements and additions to the Maple Crest Sanatorium in recent
years.
Old Church Member
He was the oldest male member of the First Presbyterian church.
Mr. Bedell married Miss Charlotte Steele, who died eight years ago. Six years ago
he married Miss Jane H. Pallock. The widow is the only survivor.
The body may be viewed at the funeral home from Thursday evening until the hour of
services Saturday.
