KENNETH W. BECK

Kenneth W. Beck, age 88, of Manitowoc, died peacefully on Saturday,
Sept. 26, 2009, at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, following a
courageous battle against cancer.
Son of the late George C. and Caroline Foerster Beck, Ken was born
on March 1, 1921, in Manitowoc. He married Winifred E. Barnstein in
1945. She survives him along with their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother: George L. Beck
and wife Margaret (Barnstein); sister: Vivian and husband Ervin Wilke;
sister-in-law: Kathryn (Barnstein) and husband Herbert Pleuss.
Kenneth graduated from Lincoln High School in 1939. At the beginning
of World War II, he worked in submarine construction at the Manitowoc
Shipbuilding Company and later served with the Army Air Force, 27th Tow
Target Squadron. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant
in 1946. After the war, he joined Mirro Aluminum as an industrial engineer.
Following 43 years with the company, Kenneth retired in 1983 as manager
of long-range production planning.
Kenneth was a lifelong member of First Reformed United Church of Christ
in Manitowoc. He sang in the choir for many years, served numerous times
on the church council and taught Sunday school from 1954-1965.
Kenneth and several other parents organized a Cub Scout pack at Jefferson
School where he served as Cub Master from 1959-1962.
In 1962, Kenneth became active in numerous Masonic organizations,
maintaining his memberships throughout his life. These organizations
include Manitowoc Lodge #65 Free and Accepted Masons, which he served as
Master in 1969, 1989 and 1990. From 1973 to 1977 he served as a district
lecturer for the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin. He was a member of the Manitowoc
Chapter #16, Royal Arch Masons: Manitowoc Council #18, Royal and Select
Masters and Manitowoc Commandery #45, Knights Templar. He was also elected
to membership in Wisconsin Priory #16, Knights of the York Cross of Honor,
where he served as Eminent Prior in 1996-97.
Kenneth joined the Tripoli Shrine Temple, Milwaukee, and the Two Rivers
Shrine Club in 1965. He was president of the Two Rivers Shrine Club in
1972, 1994, and 2001. In June 1991, he was honored as the class honoree
of the Tripoli Shrine Summer Ceremonial. He was elected to the Station
of Grand Prelate for the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Wisconsin
in 1991.
Kenneth served as the Grand Representative of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter
of Massachusetts to the Grand Chapter of Wisconsin. He was further honored
by receiving The Knights Templar Cross of Honor from the Grand Encampment
of Knights Templar.
For 18 years, Kenneth served as the Associate Guardian of Bethel #11,
International Order of Job's Daughters. He also served as chairman of the
advisory board of Edwin G. Nash Chapter, Order of Demolay for 10 years. He
served as Worthy Patron of Manitowoc Chapter #196, Order of the Easter Star,
in 1968, 1971, and 1978; and was a current member of Loyalty Chapter #118
of Plymouth, Wisconsin.
Kenneth was an accomplished woodworker and furniture maker who generously
donated his skills to family and friends over the years. He was also a
handyman extraordinaire who could always find ways to improve his
surroundings. He was a supportive and loving husband and father who believed
in the value of hard work, honesty, and fairness.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at
First Reformed United Church of Christ, 3613 Waldo Blvd., Manitowoc. The
Rev. Richard Runge will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until
the time of service at 11 a.m. A brief Masonic service will precede the
memorial service. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery. The Jens
Family Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the Beck family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Reformed United Church
of Christ, The Shriner's Hospitals for Children, or a charity of the donor's
choice.
The family thanks the wonderful staff at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center for
their loving and compassionate care of Ken during his final journey. We are
also grateful for the excellent care he received from the physicians and
staff at the Holy Family Cancer Care Center in Manitowoc and at the University
of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
