GEORGE BECK DIES SHORTLY AFTER CRASH
Injuries Suffered When Train Hit Truck Are Fatal To Local Man (Picture-Page 10)
George Beck, 61, of 31st and Custer streets, died at 4 p.m. yesterday of injuries
suffered two hours earlier when his truck was struck by a Chicago and North
Western train at the Custer street crossing.
Gene Wilkie, a South 29th street. Beck’s grandson, was said by his physician to
be recovering. Gene was with his grandfather when the Cloverland train struck the
truck. He is suffering from scalp lacerations and cuts caused by broken glass. He
lost quite a bit of blood, but had no broken bones.
Postmortem Held
Mr. Beck’s death was due to abdominal hemorrhages. He suffered a fractured hip, a
probable pelvic fracture, and multiple cuts and bruises. A postmortem was held to
determine the cause of death. It was not expected that an inquest will be held,
according to police.
The Beck truck was hit at about 2 p.m. yesterday as Mr. Beck was headed east on
Custer street with a load of manure. The train hit the machine just behind the cab,
dragging it for about 50 feet before dumping it into the ditch along the track.
Police took Beck and his grandson to the hospital in the city ambulance.
Mr. Beck was born in Two Rivers in 1879 and spent his early life there. In 1911 he
married Miss Caroline Forester and the same year moved to Manitowoc. He located on
a farm west of South 31st street near Custer street from which he operated a dairy
route. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Andrew and Philip of the first Reformed
church.
