Carl was born into a family with seven siblings. The 1920 U.S. Census listed six of these with the exception of the two who were born after 1920.

John Quincy Brewer and Elizabeth Augusta 'Gussie' Fields welcomed their son James Carl Brewer into the world on January 1, 1911 in Chatham County, North Carolina.

At the time he was born he had two older brothers; Robert Roy and Clarence 'Whittie', then after he came, another brother Eugene 'Gean', a sister Pearl 'Welch', brother John Henry, sisters Ruby 'Brown' and Opal 'Stevens'.

He was a block mason and carpenter by trade and along with two of his brothers and nephews, helped build many of the chicken houses in the area where he lived.

One of His favorite pastimes, along with several of his brothers, was the sport of fishing.

North Carolina records stated that Carl was a white, divorced, male who lived in Bear Creek, North Carolina U.S.

On March 17, 1978 in Siler City, Chatham County, North Carolina, Carl passed away at the age of 67. On March 19, 1978 he was laid to rest in Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, 5345 Airport Road, Bear Creek, North Carolina.

He was the father of two daughters by his former wife Katie.
