Kate was one of the first cohort of female civil servants (all female telegraphists) employed by the UK civil service in 1870. The 1871 census lists her occupation as "telegraph officer". There were around 20 females employed and were not allowed to "fraternise" with male employees, were escorted into and out of the workplace to prevent them associating with any "undesirables". They were also not allowed to marry whilst employed in the civil service or were in receipt of a pension which meant that Kate remained a spinster all her life (who on earth made up these stupid rules, bet it was a man!).
