CAPT. JOHN OSBORN MORSE of Edgartown, Massachusetts was a merchant and a Master Mariner.
b. 26 Jun 1802; son Uriah and Prudence (Fisher) Morse, of Edgartown. John was the second of 8 children of Uriah and Prudence Morse.

Joanna Pease, dau. of Marshall & Eliz. (Vincent) Pease. Event took place Dec. 7, 1823. (Joanna died in 1833.) Children of this marriage:

- Elizabeth P. b. abt 1830 (m. Thomas Morrison, a mariner, (b. Messina, NY abt 1823) in Edgartown, 2 Jun 1856
- Sarah M. Pease b. abt 1836 (m. William H. Monroe, d. 1902 in Danversport, Mass)

Mary Smith (b. 1813, dau of Ebenezer and Mary (Hulsart) Smith) of Edgartown. Event took place: Oct. 11, 1834
They had the following 6 living children (from birth records and the 1850 Census for John O and Mary Morse):

-Jane Ann Ellen b. 13 Aug 1843

Capt. John O. Morse was a wealthy ship owner. In 1841, in the "Report of the Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries," are recorded two of his vessels:
"Rhine" 174 ton bark, captained by Morse
"York: 434 ton ship, captained by Pease
1850: Age 47; Living in Edgartown with wife Mary, 38, and seven children ranging in age from 20 yrs. to 6 mos. Occupation: Mariner.
1851: John died of dropsy in Paita, Peru, while on a whaling voyage aboard the bark "Sarah."

1860: His widow Mary appears on the 1860 Census in Edgartown with children: James L and John O, Jr., both mariners, dau. Jennie (Jane Ann), and son Josiah in her household.
