Valerie Ann Tucker, 56, beloved daughter of Don and Tordie Combs of Victor, passed into the arms of her heavenly family Friday, July 20, 2012, in Boise, after a year-long battle with cancer.

Born in Grand Forks, N.D., in 1956, she was the eldest of three children. The family moved to Idaho Falls in February 1960. Blessed by an extraordinarily gifted, talented and loving family around her, she graduated from Skyline High School in 1974 and attended the University of Idaho for several years before joining the U.S. Navy.

Here, her talents and background allowed her to graduate from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif. Her duties dealt with translating and interpreting the Russian language for the benefit of naval and national defense authorities at all levels.

Posted first to Sinop, Turkey, on the Black Sea coast, she met her husband, Steven James Tucker of Santa Ana, Calif., and they were married March 20, 1982, in Egersund, Norway, amid her extended overseas family. She subsequently served in Misawa, Japan, and Ft. Meade, Md., raising a family of three children while her husband was at sea much of the time. Her naval career spanned eight years. After living briefly in California following her time in service, Steve and Valerie moved the family to Idaho to be near her parents, brothers and the amazing quality of life here.

Though divorcing after 20 years, Steve and Valerie remained the best and most loving of friends, and her last days were spent in his home providing two wonderful years together again with their son, Nicholas.

Valerie led a vibrant, exciting and colorful life that befitted her interests, spirit and personality perfectly and spanned the country and many parts of the world.

She leaves behind her sons, Michael (Kelly) and Nicholas; and her daughter, Rachael; her mother and father, Don and Tordie Combs; and her brothers, David Combs of Idaho Falls and Allen Combs of Hudson, N.H.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church in Jackson, Wyo.
