Virgil John Harrison "Shorty" Bay, 87, of Springfield, Missouri, and formerly of Birch Tree, Missouri, died Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield. He was born on December 29, 1924 in Oregon County, Missouri, the son of Loyd Edmond and Mary (Schneider) Bay.

Shorty was united in marriage to Sylvia Pierce on August 24, 1946. To this union, four children were born, Johnny Leon, Raymond Paul, Elizabeth Ann, and Ella Marie.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sylvia; children, Johnny, Paul and Liz; four brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include one daughter, Ella Miller and husband, Hershel, of Alton, Missouri; four sisters, Kay Walker of Springfield, MO, Joann Calvin of Nixa, MO, Louise Cline of Carthage, MO, and Mae Barnes of Independence, MO; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

In his younger years, Shorty worked in the timber. He enjoyed the outdoors and gardening. Shorty was an avid hunter and enjoyed many hunting trips out West. He loved baseball and was a Cardinal fan. He also loved animal and kids. He cherished time spent with his family.
