Pigeon died of heart failure at 9 a.m. in the Jay Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for only one day. His pallbearers were Alan McCoy, Sam Goss, Don West, Bird England, Ricky West and Clyde Brashear. However, Sam Goss was killed at his job in Tulsa before Pigeon's funeral when a concrete pipe fell on him, crushing him. Sam was buried in the new suit he had purchased to wear to his grandfather's funeral.
