Denmark Monarch. She was born a Bernadotte Princess of Sweden, where her parents were King Gustaf VI Adolf and Crown Princess Margareta, an English princess (Wettin-Windsor Dynasty). As Princess of Sweden she devoted herself mainly to humanitarian and philanthropic endeavors, especially concerned with the blind and the deaf. As of the death her mother in 1920 and especially of her grandmother Queen Viktoria of Sweden in 1930, when Ingrid was an adult, she considered herself ranked as Sweden’s first lady, which caused a strained relationship during those years with her stepmother Crown Princess Louise. Married in 1935 to Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, later King Frederik IX, she gave birth to 3 daughters who became reigning Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Princess Benedikte of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Ex-Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, clearing the way for female succession to be introduced in Denmark. She brought her interest in social services with her there. During WW2, as Nazi Germany overran of their country, the Crown Prince and Princess, like her father-in-law King Christian X of Denmark, were widely respected for staying in the country and showing careful doses of contempt toward the unwelcome occupation forces. Her tattooed husband was exceedingly popular among the Danes, and Queen Ingrid too was to become dearly beloved by the people of Denmark, as she also was by her family.
